finished it and have to say you'll either love it or hate it and i kind of loved it. the start was a little rocky, lots of names, lots of new characters all at once that i wasnt sure i would care for. but oh. care for, i did.
if you can look past the typos and formatting errors, there is a story here filled with so much heart. i loved reading about all the characters and their interconnected relationships. seeing more of the world, too - the cities, the magics, the satyrs. and i really enjoyed witnessing the complexities of another shaper-involved romance, from the perspective of the other party this time. but all the other relationships had something that gripped me too. everything from friendship to love to bitter something-elses, it had me. full grip. there's a plot here, yes, but it isn't wrapped up by the end of the book (and i can't find any information on the supposed Part 2 that was meant to exist after this), but it's not the most important thing. what matters here is a band of messy, scarred elves who have known nothing but war for most of (if not all) of their lives and the messy hearts that rage in their chests and fumble for love. it gave me that tender, raw, ariah-flavored spark that i have missed dearly. it gave me something i was very honored to feel again.
halfway through Extraction by B.R. Sanders and have to say i like it a lot more than Resistance so far. The pacing is slower (and it has more pages, and smaller font) so its been able to give a deeper look into the tangles around and within these elves that sucks at me so so good. i like the multi POVs too, because that means theres more than one painful thread to follow and im eating it all uppp

Books for Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week
🦇 It's Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week (February 18th-24th)! In an effort to #ReadQueerAllYear, here are a few books featuring aromantic characters you can add to your TBR!
💚 Little Thieves by Margaret Owen 🤍 The Bone Season - Samanta Shannon 🤍 Hullmetal Girls - Emily Skrutskie 🖤 Tarnished Are the Stars - Rosiee Thor 💚 Kaikeyi - Vaishnavi Patel 🤍 The Reckless Kind - Carly Heath 🤍 First Test - Tamora Pierce 🖤 No More Heroes - Loren Rhoads 💚 This Golden Flame - Emily Victoria 🤍 Baker Thief - Claudie Arseneault 🤍 Immoral Code - Lillian Clark 🖤 Loveless - Alice Oseman 💚 The Last 8 - Laura Pohl 🤍 The Midnight Bargain - C.L. Polk 🤍 The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy - Mackenzi Lee 🖤 Common Bonds - Claudie Arseneault, C.T. Callahan, B.R. Sanders, and RoAnna Sylver 💚 The Black Veins - Ashia Monet 🤍 Liar’s Guide to the Night Sky by Brianna Shrum 🤍 The Crow Rider - Kalyn Josephson 🖤 Summer Bird Blue - Akemi Dawn Bowman 💚 Hazel's Theory of Evolution - Lisa Jenn Bigelow 🤍 Summer of Salt - Katrina Leno 🤍 The Poppy War - R.F. Kuang 🖤 Not Even Bones - Rebecca Schaeffer 💚 Elatsoe - Darcie Little Badger 🤍 Rick - Alex Gino 🤍 Switchback by Danika Stone 🖤 Sal & Gabi Fix the Universe - Carlos Alberto Hernandez 💚 Gender Queer - Maia Kobabe 🤍 Their Troublesome Crush - Xan West 🤍 Every Bird a Prince - Jenn Reese 🖤 The Butterfly Assassin - Finn Longman 💚 Red Skies Falling - Alex London 🤍 When Villains Rise - Rebecca Schaeffer 🤍 The Bruising of Qilwa - Naseem Jamnia 🖤 Funeral Girl - Emma K. Ohland 💚 The Kindred - Alechia Dow 🤍 The Summer of Bitter and Sweet - Jen Ferguson 🤍 Dear Wendy - Ann Zhao 🖤 Tell Me How It Ends by Quinton Li 💚 This Dark Descent - Kalyn Josephson 🤍 Awakenings by Claudie Arseneault 🤍 Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White 🖤 Other People’s Butterflies by Cora Ruskin
Per @aroaessidhe: Little Thieves, The Kindred, The Summer of Bitter and Sweet, Gender Queer, (and I think The Bone Season?) have ace or demisexual MCs, not aromantic. also, a lot of the rest are side characters, not main characters.
Thank you, genuinely, so much, for this correction. I'm very sorry for the mistake. I create these guides between work assignments (I work from home, around the clock, trying to make ends meet in this mess of an economy) and didn't do my due diligence in double-checking every book. I think this started as an aro/ace list I was compiling and I tried to separate it into two guides. I apologize for the discrepancy vehemently and will strive to do better in the future. Thank you for catching my error.

reading goals habits for 2025
this is along the same lines as @the---hermit 's post about not setting reading goals for the next year. because my life has gotten so much busier since starting my new job, i simply do not have the time anymore to regularly read a book per week. at least not if i also want to have a social life and get some rest.
so, in 2025 i will not set myself a number of books i want to read. instead what i do want to do is establishing some new habits related to books and reading and keeping in mind things i've already established this year.
not borrowing more than two books at a time from the library. i know, sometimes it can be hard especially when several holds become available at the same time. and up until this summer that was never a problem for me. but now i want to make sure i don't put more pressure on myself by having several books sitting there with a countdown, i'd rather push the hold back another week or two and actually take the time i want to with the book.
brought on by a recent storygraph update: don't try to power through the rest of a book just to make it in time for a loan to expire. there is a pause feature now, it will not mess with the stats, and the next time the loan will be available i can take my time with it again.
similarly, i want to keep up what i've already done quite well this year. if i don't vibe with a book, i dnf it. nobody cares. i don't have to spend time on it that could be spend on more enjoyable books, no matter how many other people loved the book or how interesting it initially sounded.
according to storygraph, which should be up to date, i currently own 55 books that i haven't read yet. i would very much love it, if that number either stayed the same or went down by the end of the year. but since i can't account for books that future-me will inevitably buy, i'd at least like to see if i'm in the mood for one of those books before browsing my libby tags for something that's currently available just to end up with several new holds.
lastly, i have a maybe. something that i want to try out, see if it works for me right now. i never was someone who wrote reviews for books but i've been getting into the habit of answering the review questions on storygraph including trigger warnings and themes, and i thought why not try and put my thoughts into a somewhat coherent form as well? written reviews are something i often consult when looking at a book, so maybe something i write will be helpful for someone else, who knows! maybe this will even help me remember books better - we all know that my brain is a sieve, so perhaps taking a few minutes to sort through my thoughts will help with that lmao.
that's it, that's the plan. the post already looks a lot longer than i expected it to be, sorry about that, but we're talking books/reading here so i could happily go on a few more tangents!
what, you thought i was actually done? um, so... usually, i'd be doing a 25 for 2025 post but that is such a big number so i couldn't stop myself from doing seven books i'd like to prioritise in 2025 instead (my favourite number :) ):
ace by a. chen
fire becomes her by r. thor
common bonds* by c.t. callahan, b.r. sanders, r. sylver, and c. arseneault
shit cassandra saw by g.e. kirby
the book thief by m. zusak
grimms märchen by the brothers grimm
a speculative fiction book (perhapss an anthology) that i haven't decided on yet
if you made it all the way down here, wow, impressive, thank you for listening to me essentially talking to myself. happy reading! <3

hi, i’m here from your art blog (good stuff 👍) and could i please know the name of the poly elves book you were obsessed with
ariah by b.r. sanders! i dont want my fanart to give the idea that its super smutty or anything because its not. its super emotional and heavily focused on character development and like. ~finding oneself~ and i really, really love it for that. its about how ariah makes mistake after mistake in his life and the people he finds along the way who stay with him through it all. its about the risks we all take to be who we need to be in order to live freely and joyously and its about love. its all about love. fumbling, devoted, patient love. and elves of course <3

tumblr user wiltking i come to you in my time of need. im trying to get back into reading fantasy books but i havent touched the genre in a decade. do you have any reccomendations for one-offs or shorter series you enjoyed? asking for your taste specifically bc ive enjoyed snippets of books youve shared quite a bit
you come to me the chronic series reader and ask for one-offs.. 😵‍💫 this is the best i can do!
- the faerie hounds of york by arden powell - historical romance fantasy novella. its a bit sad but its stuck with me for several years notably for its eerie atmosphere.
- leech by hiron ennes - horror, marked as scifi, but it has a heavy fantasy feel. one of my top favorite books i read last year by far. a real treat if you have even the slightest interest in medical stuff.
- a royal affair by john wiltshire - charming fantasy romance with unique narration and a stubbornly joyous tone in spite of the not so joyous events. has a sequel (that i enjoyed too) but its highly optional.
- lord of the white hell (duology) by ginn hale - fantasy romance. part of a larger series but its not at all necessary to read all of the books, and these first two are especially quick and easy to read (comparatively).
- ariah by b.r. sanders - messssssy and emotional fantasy romance about elves. not the best first pick to go with off this list, and its very polarizing among the people i've rec'd it to. but i have to mention it as a personal favorite.

TPIJ Book Recommendations: “Ariah” by B.R. Sanders
Representation: Bisexual, Poly
Ariah's magical training has been interrupted. Forced to rely on a mentor, Dirva, who is not who he claims to be, and a teacher who is foreign and powerful, Ariah is drawn into a culture wholly different from the elven one that raised him.
As his friendship with Dirva's brother blossoms into a surprising romance, and he slowly learns how to control the dangerous magic in his blood, life finally appears to be coming together for Ariah—but love and security are cut short by a tyrannical military empire bent on expanding its borders.
War, betrayal, passion, and confusion follow Ariah as his perilous journey leads him beyond the walls of the Empire, and into unfamiliar territory within himself. Along the way, he’ll discover just how much he’s willing to give up to find his place in the world, and he’ll learn what it means to sacrifice himself for freedom—and for love.

Just finished reading 'ariah' by b.r. sanders... oh how wonderously polyamorous! I spent a lot of this book in the agony of longing and almost ragequit halfway through because I thought ariah and sorcha were never going to get together, but my advice is... be patient. This is a sweeping, epic book spanning decades and vast distances, covering all the loves of ariah's life, but dont despair... it all circles back together. It explores different kinds of love and relationships, different ideas of what a family is in a really beautiful way. Its honestly a very touching and romantic book. Gender fluidity is also touched on in an interesting way when sorcha, a male character, begins to lactate and temporarily develops a more feminine body. Sorcha's nonchalance about it is fabulous. Ugh, I love sorcha and ariah both so much. I could write fanfic about this and I damn well might. Highly recommend this book. Will definitely read again and with less agony this time now that I know how things work out.
